Gallery rails can get surprisingly expensive—and if you’ve been researching budget-friendly options, you’ve probably seen the clever trick of using lamp hardware as a DIY alternative. I decided to DIY some for my Laundry Room. You can see the whole project here.

But figuring out where to find those parts (and how they actually come together) isn’t always obvious.

Here’s a simple, step-by-step breakdown to help you get it done with confidence.

diy gallery rail Measure Your Shelf

First, you’ll need to find the length and depth measurements of your shelf and decide on your design. I was torn about how many posts I wanted across the front of my shelf as you can see here in my drawing.

Now, before you get your heart set on something, take into account rod sizes. These particular rods come in 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 inch lengths. You’ll need to build your design around those length sizes while also considering the size of the ball heads (you’ll need to leave space for these as well).

Order Your Lamp Parts

Here are links to all the lamp parts you’ll need:

I chose to go with a polished nickel finish. This resulted in needing to spray paint some of the ball pieces that aren’t available in polished nickel. I’ve linked all brass for you. If you want a different color, just copy and paste the item name and replace the color with the one you’re looking for.

Instead of spray painting all of the pieces, I went this route because I honestly do not like the look of metallic spray paint. I never feel like it truly looks like metal. Since I could get the majority of the pieces, especially the rods, in polished nickel, I figured just having to spray paint a couple of the rods would not be very noticeable, and I was right! Woohoo! If you’re going with polished nickel, I’d recommend this route as well.

**Don’t make this mistake: you NEED these measurements: 1/8″ ips for both your rods and your ball heads; 2 threads by 5 threads for your rods. Yes, I am telling you this from experience!

Screw the ball heads into the brass necks, then the rods into the ball heads. Seriously- it’s SO EASY!

Install

Option 1- So you can just do this the super duper easy way and just hot glue them in place. If this isn’t a high traffic area, honestly, why not?!

Option 2- I had considered this, and then when it came down to it, it felt like more work than it was worth. You can screw small holes into your shelf that align with the brass necks. Then, get wooden dowels to put inside the brass necks. Put a little bit of wood glue in the holes you drilled and then stick them into the holes and let dry. This would be a really secure way to install the gallery rail. I haven’t tried it this way, but this would be a great way if you using the items on this shelf often.
