DIY Faux Carrara Marble Countertops (Beginner-Friendly)
If you’ve been following along with our laundry room makeover, you know I wanted this space to feel elevated while still staying budget-friendly. One of the biggest design moments in the room is the countertop — and instead of splurging on real stone, I created DIY faux Carrara marble countertops that deliver the look of marble without the luxury price tag.
This project is approachable, affordable, and completely beginner-friendly. With the right prep and a few simple tools, you can recreate the soft veining and polished look of Carrara marble using peel-and-stick contact paper — no special skills required.
Below, I’m walking you through the full process step by step, along with tips that make the finished result look far more realistic.
Why Choose Faux Marble Countertops?
Faux marble countertops are a great option if you want:
-
The look of marble without the cost
-
A DIY-friendly project that doesn’t require specialty tools
-
A lightweight solution for spaces like laundry rooms, mudrooms, or secondary kitchens
While this method isn’t meant to replace real stone in high-heat or heavy-use kitchens, it works beautifully in lower-impact spaces and delivers a high-end look on a budget.
Step 1: Decide on Your Countertop Shape
Before applying any faux marble, it’s important to plan the shape and structure of your countertop. I wanted these counters to feel custom, so I opted for:
-
A raised upper countertop
-
A curved side splash for a softer, furniture-inspired look
For the base, I used cabinet-grade plywood, which provides a sturdy foundation. For the main surface, I chose a butcher block countertop from Home Depot. The thickness gave me the substantial look I wanted, and it was already the perfect depth for the sink base cabinet. I cut the butcher block to size using a circular saw.
Creating the Curved Side Splash
To design the curved side splash:
-
I decided on a 10-inch countertop depth
-
Started the curve 10 inches in from the edge
-
Tested a few curve heights visually until it felt right
To get smooth, symmetrical curves, I traced bowls in different sizes, clamped both side splash pieces together, and cut them at the same time using a jigsaw. After sanding the edges smooth, the result felt custom and intentional.
Step 2: Apply Adhesive (Don’t Skip This)
Although faux marble contact paper is peel-and-stick, I highly recommend using spray adhesive as an extra layer of security. I’ve used peel-and-stick marble in past projects, and while it can hold up on its own, adding adhesive dramatically improves longevity and prevents lifting over time.
Important: Spray adhesive is extremely sticky. Once the contact paper touches the surface, repositioning is difficult. If this is your first time working with contact paper, practice on a scrap piece first.
Applying the Faux Marble
I applied the contact paper slowly, treating it like wallpaper:
-
Peel the backing a little at a time
-
Smooth as you go using a scraper tool
-
Work out air bubbles immediately
Once applied, I trimmed the excess using a sharp razor blade, taking extra care around the curved edges. Clean edges make a huge difference in how realistic faux marble countertops look.
To finish, I placed a thin towel over the surface and lightly ran an iron across it to help activate the adhesive and smooth everything out.
Pro tip: Choose contact paper that is as wide — or wider — than your countertop to avoid seams entirely.

Step 3: Caulk for a Finished Look
Caulking is a small step that makes a big visual impact. I applied a thin bead of caulk anywhere the countertop met:
-
The wall
-
The cabinet
-
Another countertop section
This instantly made everything look more polished and helped the faux marble blend seamlessly into the surrounding surfaces.
Finishing Touches
To complete the look, I added a faux gallery rail to the upper countertop. This detail leans into the classic, high-end feel of Carrara marble and adds a subtle touch of glamour. If you’re committing to faux marble, this detail really sells the look.
